NCAA Week 6 Odds: Gators John Brantley already ruled out vs LSU

Saturday’s home blowout loss to Alabama just got a little worse for Florida as Gators starting QB John Brantley left the game with an injury and has been ruled out for Saturday’s game at No. 1 LSU.

True freshman Jeff Driskel has been the back-up quarterback since training camp and is considered the starter, but coach Will Muschamp said Tyler Murphy (redshirt freshman) and Jacoby Brissett (true freshman) will get a chance to beat him out this week.

Regarding Brantley’s replacement, he said, “Jeff Driskel, Jacoby Brissett and Tyler Murphy will all receive reps. I’m pleased with Jeff and his progress of where he is, but right now all those guys will rep. Who practices the best will be the guys that play.”

He would not say whether the Florida Gators plan to use multiple quarterbacks this week. Muschamp also offered little clarification on Brantley’s injury. He classified it as a “lower leg” issue and said it will not require surgery.

He was hurt on a sack with 35 seconds left in the first half against Alabama on Saturday. Crimson Tide LB Courtney Upshaw took him down hard, and Brantley lay on the ground clutching his right leg. Brantley had completed 11-of-16 passes for 190 yards and one touchdown before his injury. Driskel played the entire second half against Alabama. He completed just 2-of-6 passes for 14 yards. He was sacked once but also ran six times for 18 yards, including a 31-yard run on a third down. The Gators managed just 46 yards of offense in the final two quarters.

UF finished with 15 rushing yards on 29 carries one week after gaining more than 400 yards on the ground against Kentucky last week. Chris Rainey, UF’s formerly elusive senior running back, carried the ball eight times for minus-2 yards. Jeff Demps, the Gators’ running back/track star, carried the ball three times for only 4 yards.

Driskel or Brissett would be the first true freshman to start at quarterback since Chris Leak in 2003.
